HEMIPLEGIC MIGRAINES

Hemiplegic migraines are a rare type of migraine that can mimic a stroke. The first episode of a hemiplegic migraine can be very scary and a stroke must be ruled out before the diagnosis of a hemiplegic migraine can be made. Due to the nature of the symptoms that can present, attacks can be disconcerting and/or scary for people as they may feel as though they have less control of their body or are less safe to perform tasks such as drive. Symptoms can range from mild with little to no impact on daily life to severe with greater impact to activities of daily living.

It is not uncommon for hemiplegic symptoms to start when you are a child or in your teenage years.

Symptoms include:
  • Severe throbbing head pain
  • Weakness on one side of the body - including the face, arm and leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the affected limbs as well
  • Visual disturbances
  • Difficulty speaking or slurred speech
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of coordination
More severe and rarer symptoms include:
  • Confusion
  • Loss of motor control
  • Memory loss
  • Decreased consciousness
Symptoms can last for hours to days.
